2012 eMLB Mock Draft - Picks 1-4

Here is a (very) early look at the first four picks of the eMLB Free Agent Draft.

1. Hackensack Bulls: Jose Bautista, OF/3B
I think this pick probably comes down to Adrian Gonzalez and Bautista, and Ben ultimately picks Bautista because (in my opinion) he's the best offensive player in the draft. Ben could slot Bautista in at 3B, giving him the best 3B in the game, and still find a very productive 1B with his second round pick. A five year contract for Bautista is a little risky, but the worst case scenario probably has him playing out his final two years under contract as a DH.

2. Olivet Killer Eagles: Robinson Cano, 2B
Larry's OF is full, he's got Asdrubal Cabrera at SS, and Dunn/Morales at 1B/UTIL; all these factors conspire to make Cano the pick here. My guess is Cano gets a 5-year deal and is destined to spend all five years in Olivet.

3. Michigan Miracles: Adrian Gonzalez, 1B
This pick comes down to Gonzo, Tulo and Reyes in my opinion. I think Gonzo and Tulo are the finalists and Gonzo wins out. He's a great 5-year player who should put up monster numbers in a park that seemingly was built for his swing.

4. Atlantic Surge: Jose Reyes, SS
I think Squire just blew his load. A big time Mets fan, and saddled with a lousy SS by a previous owner (Bartlett), he is more than happy to lock up his man crush for five years. Now he just has to hope Reyes' hammy can hold up for five years.

I've said all along that I would be happy with either Tulo/Cano/AGon with my pick. I don't think I can go wrong with any of them. Bautista as a pick for Hackensack is interesting but I think he will go with a more certain 5 yr. As history has shown, what the hell do I know. I do this though, I'm thirsty Hoyle. Parched in fact...man do I need a beer.

There is some risk involved with Bautista as a five year guy, but even if he winds up playing out the last two years as a DH he'll still be productive. Ben obviously has a great deal of control over how the top five picks go.

What kind of beer do you want?

I can't see Reyes going before Tulo, even on a homer pick, and I personally think that Bautista ends up falling to you at #5.

My top 5 right now are:

1. Hackensack - Adrian Gonzalez
2. Olivet - Robinson Cano
3. Michigan - Troy Tulowitzki
4. Atlantic - Jose Reyes
5. Julian - Jose Bautista

Come on Berg, use that big brain of yours and come up with the top 3 picks if the order is different. Unless that dice game you play is fixed????? Will AGon, Cano, Tulo be the consenses top three no matter what order the teams pick?

I think it makes the most sense for Femmel to draft Adrian Gonzales with Pedroia locked into 2B, and Castro at SS.

I think it makes sense for Larry to draft Cano with a glut of 1B, and Cabrera at SS.

Cano makes the least sense for you because of Zobrist, and I don't think he would be as good of a fit in the OF as he is at 2B.

My personal feeling is that Bautista is the best player in the draft, followed by Gonzalez, Teixeira, Cano, and Tulo. I understand the hesitation to draft Bautista & Tex as 5yr guys, which is the main reason I think that they will fall out of the Top 3.

I agree that Cano makes the least sense for Renner, which is why he'l probably take him. Zobrist is clearly most valuable at 2B or SS, but he isn't SS eligible anymore. His value is dulled in the OF, where he's only slightly above average. If Renner is smart, he takes either Gonzo or Tulo, and I think Gonzo makes sense since he already has a SS under contract.

Berg is probably right about Tulo going before Reyes, but we've seen stranger things happen. And I could see Squire taking Reyes thinking that he'd have SB locked up most weeks between Upton and Reyes. Plus, he's obviously an irrational Mets fan (all I have to say is he's stuck with Pelfrey for two more years).

After the offensive struggles his team had in 2010, I just think Femmel goes with the best offensive player. Frankly, I don't think he can go wrong with either Gonzalez or Bautista. And like I said, he can probably still find a solid 1B in the second round. Not sure you can say the same if he passes on Bautista as a 3B.

I figure the chances are pretty good that I'm left with a choice between 2 or 3 of Bautista, Reyes, Tulo, Upton and maybe Gonzalez. I can live with that.

No matter what I do it moves one of my contracted guys to the bench. Kelly Johnson is contracted but not sure what to expect from him next season even though he's puts up solid secondary numbers even with a shitty BA. I could use Cuddyer pretty much anywhere so I could take Bautista if he's there, or assume that Morales is still going to need time to recover and take Gonzalez. There's also the Dunn factor... truth is, if not for Cabrera it would be a slam dunk pick for me with Tulowitzki but as it stands Cano is the likely choice
